Assoc. Prof. Dr. Umut Rıza Gündüz is a distinguished Bariatric and General Surgeon with over 20 years of surgical experience and more than 5,000 successful bariatric surgeries to his name. He is a recognized member of IFSO—the world’s leading and most prestigious international organization in obesity and metabolic surgery—since 2022.
Education & Surgical Training
Born in 1978 in Ankara, Dr. Gündüz began his medical education in Istanbul, earning his Medical Doctor (M.D.) degree from the Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 2004. He completed his general surgery residency at Okmeydanı Training and Research Hospital between 2005 and 2010 and earned the title of General Surgery Specialist at the end of 2010.
In early 2011, he was appointed to Antalya Training and Research Hospital, where he performed a wide range of procedures in emergency surgery, laparoscopic surgery, hernia surgery, oncologic surgery, and bariatric surgery. In 2017, following the publication of multiple scientific articles, he successfully passed the national associate professorship examination and was awarded the title of Associate Professor of Surgery.
Professional Career
Between 2011 and 2021, Dr. Gündüz served as a Clinical Instructor at Antalya Training and Research Hospital, where he was actively involved in training surgical assistants and performing complex surgical cases. He is particularly known for his interest and skill in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, oncological procedures, and obesity surgery.
Since 2021, Dr. Gündüz has been performing surgeries at Clinic Phaselis, where he continues to provide life-changing care to patients from Turkey and around the world.
